Disposal

Trash, recycling and household objects are accepted at the Thornton (& Campton) Transfer Station on route 175 just north of Campton Village.  The service is supported by town property taxes and requires a transfer station sticker available at Campton and Thornton Town Hall.

A few important particulars:

  • No lids or caps on recyclable containers (they fall out of the compacted cubes of plastic)
  • No black plastic
  • Corrugated cardboard is recycled, paper and paperboard is not (aka trash)
  • Styrofoam can be recycled, but only if it fits in special disposal container box near recycling drop off
  • Clothing & shoes can be donated via special container box near recycling drop off.
  • For large items (appliances, construction debris, etc) there is a small charge. They only accept checks, no cash
  • Lawn and tree clippings are accepted during specific periods, check ahead to confirm.
  • Metal recycling is dropped off on the way out…after trash compactor.

Storage

WvE is surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest, therefore black bears often venture into our community looking for easy meals, especially in the spring. Keeping trash secure is everyones responsibility.  Once a bear its able to access household trash, they will be back again and again.  If your trash is hit by a bear, it is your responsibility to clean it up and insure it does not happen again. 

All trash must be kept in a bear proof (metal) container out of sight from the road or stored inside a secure building.  Heavy gauge ‘bear resistant’ plastic garbage totes have been known to fail once a bear gets aggressive. Bears have been known to pull shed doors apart, so insure your shed is up to the task…and keep the smells down so as not to tempt them.  Exterior bear proof trash containers must be secured to an unmovable object, otherwise the bear will toss the trash can around until it breaks open.

A trash compactor will greatly reduce the amount of trash needing to be stored.
